PICTURE HANGING

Picture Hanging & Gallery Walls in Dallas

Most people already have the art. What stops them is the part that can't be undone: holes in the wrong place, a mirror that comes down, a gallery wall that never quite lines up. I lay it out first, then hang it. One set of holes.

What I Hang

The Height Rule Nobody Uses

Almost everyone hangs art too high. The instinct is to center it on the wall, which puts it a few inches above where it belongs, and a few inches is the difference between a room that looks composed and one that looks slightly off in a way nobody can name.

There are two exceptions. Over furniture, the art relates to the sofa or console, not the floor: the bottom edge sits six to eight inches above the back of the sofa, so the two read as one group. Over a fireplace, the mantel sets the line, and the firebox height and mantel depth both come into it.

57 to 60 inches

That's where the center of the art goes, measured from the floor. It's roughly eye level for most people, and it's the standard galleries and museums hang to.

Gallery Walls

On a gallery wall, the layout is the job. The drilling takes twenty minutes.

I work out the arrangement before anything goes up, on the floor, with paper templates, or in tape on the wall, so you can see it and move things while moving them is still free. Frames sit two to three inches apart, tighter for small pieces, and the grouping is treated as one shape, with a level top line, a level bottom line or a consistent center, depending on how it's built.

Then it goes up in one pass, each piece level and spaced to match. If you want to add to it later, I'll leave you the layout so the next pieces land where they should.

Heavy Mirrors and Large Pieces

This is where things fail, and they fail at the anchor. Anything with real weight, like a big framed mirror, a large canvas or a heavy antique frame, needs a stud, a toggle bolt or a French cleat, not the hook that came taped to the back.

A French cleat spreads the load across the whole top edge, and it's what I use for wide or heavy pieces. It also lets the piece sit flat against the wall instead of tipping forward.

Worth doing right

A failed picture hook costs you a frame. A failed mirror over a vanity, console or mantel costs you the mirror, whatever was under it, and the cleanup.

Walls That Need a Different Approach

Plaster and lath in older Park Cities, Lakewood and East Dallas homes, pre-drilled so the plaster doesn't crack around the hole.

Brick and stone fireplaces, drilled into the mortar joint where possible, which holds well and leaves a repairable hole.

Tile in bathrooms and backsplashes, with the right bit and no rush.

Metal studs in newer construction, where a wood screw won't hold and the fastener has to change.

starting price

How much does picture hanging cost in Dallas?

What moves the price:

  • How many pieces you're hanging
  • Heavy mirrors and oversized art
  • Plaster, brick, stone or tile walls

Send a few photos of the pieces and the wall, and I can usually quote without a visit.

A Recent Job: Ten Pieces Across Three Rooms in Dallas

This family had about ten pieces of art to hang across three rooms, all on sheetrock: framed prints, kids' artwork and canvases, and nothing up on the walls yet.

The tricky part was the heights. On one wall, several larger pieces had to sit at exactly the same height. On the wall next to it, the family wanted smaller pieces centered on the middle of those larger ones, so the two walls read as one arrangement. I set a laser line for each, laid everything out before drilling, and hung each room in one pass.

Common Questions

How much does picture hanging cost in Dallas?

Picture hanging starts at $120 for labor. A few frames on drywall sits at the low end; a planned gallery wall, a heavy mirror, or a plaster, brick or tile wall takes longer and costs more. Send photos of the pieces and the wall and I'll give you a number before anyone comes out.

Can you hang a heavy mirror on drywall with no stud?

Yes. Toggle bolts or a French cleat carry far more than a standard hook, and a cleat spreads the weight along the top edge. What I won't do is hang something heavy on an anchor that isn't rated for it.

Can you plan the gallery wall, or do I need to know the layout?

I'll lay it out with you before anything gets drilled, so you can see the arrangement and change it while it's still free to change. If you already have a layout in mind, I'll hang to it.

Will there be a lot of holes in my wall?

No. I measure and lay out first and hang in one pass, so the holes I make are the ones the art covers. On a rehang, I'll patch the old holes where the new arrangement leaves them showing.
